Illness and medication

Illness

At some point your child will no doubt be unwell and you will have to keep him or her off school.

When this happens please telephone school as soon as possible, but preferably prior to 9.00am, to let us know that your child will not be in school. It is very helpful if you can tell us what the matter is as we can spot if there is a particular illness going round- 01752812245

  • If your child has been vomiting or had diarrhoea we would ask you to keep him/her at home until they have been well for twenty four hours.
  • If your child is showing sympton of COVID 19 they should remain home from school and you need to tell school as sson as possible.
    • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)

a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

Medicines

Doctors frequently advise that children can attend school whilst requiring medication, either because they are suffering from a chronic illness or allergy, or because they are recovering from a short term illness and are undergoing a course of treatment needing antibiotics.

We have a comprehensive policy for the administration of all medicines. A medicine form should be completed and the medicine needs to be dropped off at the school office.

Inhalers

If your child suffers from asthma we would ask you to complete the appropriate form (available from the office staff) and supply us with an inhaler, which we will keep in your child’s classroom. A register which records each child’s individual requirements is in place in school. Children will take inhalers with them whenever they go on a school trip.

Accidents and Illness in school

We have many trained Paediatric First Aiders and all staff have training in basic First Aid. We also have comprehensive policies and procedures to ensure the safety of your child.

If your child becomes ill or has an accident whilst they are in school and we feel that he or she needs either further medical attention or to go home, we will contact you so that you can arrange for your child to be collected.

IN CASE OF  AN ACCIDENT OR ILLNESS IT IS VITAL THAT WE HAVE UP TO DATE HOME/WORK AND MOBILE TELEPHONE NUMBERS FOR YOU AND YOUR DESIGNATED CONTACTS
