Torpoint Town Council Civic Service and Parade

Sunday 11th October 2015

Children from our Forces Friends group took part in both the service and parade this year as the service included the blessing and dedication of the Torpoint HMS Heroes Standard.

Sunday 11th October saw one of the most important community events in our town with the Mayor’s Civic service. This always starts with a wonderful parade from the Council Chambers including local Mayors and other dignitaries, our Town Councillors and representatives of many of the local organisations. The British Legion parade with their standards and this year, for the very first time, the furled standard for HMS Heroes was present. I hope that you managed to see the two members of our Forces Family Group who escorted the standard all the way down to St James’ Church. (Sadly the standard will always be too heavy and tall for our children to hold and process with).

As we entered into church, the furled standard was placed upon the altar until it was dedicated later on in the service. Once the dedication had taken place, the Standard was able to process in its full glory in the parade back up to the Council Chambers and during this part of the day two different members of our school escorted the standard followed by many of the Torpoint Nursery and Infant School Forces Family children. They walked beautifully and proudly and took part in the salute by the Comrades Club.
We had been asked by our Mayor to sing during the service and our Year 2 pupils did not let us down. They attended in excellent numbers and sang four songs beautifully and much to the enjoyment of the assembled congregation.

These events will form important memories for our children and enable them to see how important and valued they are by the community of Torpoint.
Thank you to all the parents who took the time to bring their children to this event. Thank you also to Councillor Rose Southworth who is responsible for us having our own HMS Heroes standard for Torpoint.
I have for years been able to say how proud I am of the children who attend our school (as well as of the parents and staff) and you have heard me say this so many times but no matter how many times I do say it , it will always be true. There can be no prouder Head Teacher because we achieve so much together and our children are just so special. The comments that I received from so many people on Sunday shows just how proud the town is of our school and how appreciative the townsfolk are of all our children do and achieve.
