English

We aim to ensure our children develop a love of learning with particular reference to all aspects of our English Curriculum which has been developed based on the national curriculums that are set out by the Government

Children will develop as confident communicators through speaking and listening, reading and writing.

Our creative curriculum provides children with opportunities to apply the skills learnt in all aspects of English in a meaningful way, one that enthuses and motivates them.

Phonics

To enable children to become successful in speaking and listening, reading and writing they need to have phonological awareness. Children develop these skills from EYFS 1 through the delivery of our comprehensive phonics programme which has been devised by us, supported by resources from the Read Write Inc. Schemet and resources purchased through the government Match Funding Scheme.  This programme develops the phonological awareness required for them to read and write confidently in all areas of the curriculum.

Phonics is taught in small groups across the school on a daily basis and children are grouped according to their individual needs. Progress is tracked regularly and children move between groups according to their needs. The quality of phonics teaching is monitored regularly and all staff are involved in on-going training as needed.

Reading

It is our aim to develop a love of reading for both pleasure and the desire to read to gain information. It is imperative that we teach the skills necessary for reading. These skills are primarily taught through shared reading and guided reading and consolidated through individual reading. Children are given the opportunity to read a range of literature that includes narrative, non-fiction, poetry and media texts. We work closely with parents and carers so that the skills taught at school can be practised at home. To support reading in our school we will provide a language rich environment through displays, class collections of books, topic related books, the school library, captions, labels and interactive displays.

We do not follow one reading scheme and instead use a variety of books from different schemes and publishers to meet the needs and interests of individuals. These books are grouped into reading attainment levels according the the book banding system. Book bands are carefully graded by reading levels that enavle us to select books from different reading schemes with confidence, knowing that they are the right level for your child.

Speaking and Listening

Through the delivery of a creative curriculum children are given frequent opportunities to develop their speaking and listening skills from Nursery through to Year 2.

From when the children enter school  they are involved in activities where they are encouraged to develop confidence in speaking to a group and to listen to others.  We develop confident speakers and good listeners through a variety of activities including small group work, paired work, the opportunities to take part in whole school assemblies, whole school performances, drama, roleplay, and through regular reciting of rhymes and poems.
