Mathematics

Through creative, practical and exciting teaching of mathematics we enable our children to not only feel confident using their developing  skills , knowledge and understanding  to tackle mathematics activities but also to feel pleasure and wonder when they solve a problem for the first time, discover patterns, or notice connections.

We believe that Mathematics develops and uses children’s confidence, independence, persistence and co-operation skills.

The manner in which our curriculum is organised enables all children, including those with individual needs , to fully participate in learning activities. Our ACHIEVE curriculum underpins all subjects

We ensure that :

• Teaching of mathematics is creative, practical and exciting.

• Children are proficient, competent and confident with numbers, calculations, shape, space and measures, and to have an ability to solve related problems in a variety of contexts including everyday applications of the subject.

• Children have positive attitudes towards the wonder of mathematics and the vast application of mathematics in our world.

• Children are independent recorders of their mathematical thinking and methods.

Nursery and Reception

In Nursery and Reception we follow the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). With support from the Development Matters publications to inform our own school curriculum and to help staff identify ways of working that enable children to demonstrate the typical behaviours for their age.

We ensure children are supported in developing their understanding of Mathematics in a broad range of contexts in which they can explore, enjoy, learn, practice and talk about their developing understanding.

Children are provided with opportunities to practice and extend their skills, including recording, in all areas and to gain confidence and competence.

Key Stage One

In Key Stage One the  current National Curriculum is used as the basis for our own curriculum.

Whilst ensuring broad coverage of all areas on mathematics,  our primary focus is on children developing core number knowledge, skills and understanding. We ensure that this is done in contexts that allow children to use and apply their mathematics.

We  have a separate support document that staff use , focusing on the approriate support materials to ensure progression and  growing competence in number knowledge, skills and understanding.
