Farewell to Mrs Carney- Haworth OBE

The school community are saddened that Mrs Carney- Haworth's retirement has come in the middle of the cornavirus pandemic. This has prevented us from thanking her and marking the end of her 42 year career in education in the way that we would usually, and in the way that we would want to .

In the absence of those special assemblies, speeches at community events and a tea party which cannot happen in the current situation we have set up this page to say thank you and to share memories of her time in our school.

If you would like to add to this page please email us at with your messages and  memories to

Mrs Julie Martin, Chair of Governors

I have been recalling the many highlights of your headship at our school and the changes and improvements that you have brought about over the last 13 years not least bringing Torpoint Infant School from its requires improvement status to become the leading edge outstanding Torpoint Nursery and Infant School. I remember well the jubilation and pride felt by the whole community following that Ofsted rating.

There are so many inspirational and significant changes that you brought to our school and community but for me a particular highlight has to be the community involvement. From opening the school up to celebrate the building’s 100 year anniversary to introducing singing and allowing the children to perform at the Town’s notable events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Armed Forces Day, the annual switching on of the Christmas Lights and the Mayor’s annual Civic Service to name but a few. There are not many schools that can claim national stardom singing “The Ferry Song” and Torpoint Nursery and Infant School children were seen attending Civic Parades, Remembrance Day Parades and the school also held their own community events; Country Dance days and their own Remembrance Service.

The school and the community have been very fortunate to have you as our Headteacher Elisabeth. Your enthusiasm, drive and determination has never waned and everyone was so pleased for you and David when your contributions were recognised and you received your OBEs. You brought Torpoint Nursery and Infant School into the national limelight with Operation Encompass and we were always so proud that you were our Headteacher.

We are not able to give you the send off that I would have expected and I know that you also didn’t envisage your career finishing like this. However, Elisabeth you should be immensely proud of what you have achieved and the difference you have made to the education and lives of many, many children during your 42 year career. The most important thing now is for you to concentrate on your health so that yourself and David can enjoy the retirement you so richly deserve,

On behalf of the Staff and Governors of Torpoint Nursery and Infant School and the wider community of Torpoint thank you so much for your service and dedication in enriching the lives of our children and their families. We all wish you and David improved health and a long and happy retirement.
